Creature
Creature is Ila's second instrumental album, recorded as a guitar trio (Matt Brewer - bass; Tommy Crane - Drums) It features 10 original compositions –written music as well as improvisation– preformed live in the studio, and then enhanced with written guitar overdubs and special effects for a uniquely surreal experience.
Reviewer, Mel Minter, describes Ila's music to have "...startling and lovely non-Euclidean logic. As insistent as rock and roll and as supple as jazz, these songs reveal Cantor’s special genius for unpacking what appear to be small musical ideas and discovering an expanding universe of expressive possibilities.
Writer and founder of Najulda Records, David Weisberg, notes: "Although grounded in jazz, Ila’s music and playing challenges our contemporary categories of music. Her guitar speaks for itself. At a moment of great ferment and interplay among all kinds of music – highbrow and pop, West and East, rock and jazz, alternative and mainstream, straight and out-there – her work stands out for its compelling originality and musical integrity."
*Fun Fact: the electric guitar was plugged into 3 amps simultaneously! It was so cool.
